My Experience with the Sakara Detox Program + Q&A
Hi Guys! I am finally getting around to sharing my recent Sakara experience! As you know Serg and I recently did a 5 (technically 7) day detox with Sakara and I got so many questions that I wanted to give you a bit more in depth thoughts on it! The goal of these programs are more health/nutrition based so the goals are to heal gut, debloat, shed excessive weight, boost energy, improve digestion. In addition, I wanted to se if we could bring down Serg’s blood pressure wit a plant based approach! AND we did! Friday he went back for another check up and his blood pressure is back to normal. Hopefully if we continue to include more plant based we can keep it up!
I want to preface this by saying I am not a food expert or nutritionist, as always I just share what I try and my own experience. Definitely talk to your MD or nutritionist if you have in depth questions or the Sakara website has a ton of nutritional info here!
Ok so a bit of a breakdown of the program; we opted for the 5 Day Signature Meal Plan and it is delivered to your door bright and early on Monday for 3 meals and on Thursday am for your last two meals. All the food comes packaged recyclable containers in a cooled ice box. It can sit on your porch nice and cold for quite a while! Your meals come with breakfast, lunch, dinner, detox tea (LOVED), an energy bar and their probiotics which I also loved and am for sure repurchasing!
One hack that I can provide is if you’re like me I opted to eat our breakfast for our desserts after dinner! I am not a breakfast person and def don’t start my day craving something sweet BUT for sure love a sweet little something after dinner. This really gave me something to look forward to at the end of the day!
We decided to really commit to this and gave up alcohol for the week too. To be real real with you, this pandemic has given us an excuse for everyday 5pm (sometimes 4pm) wine time and I think it had gotten to be too much of a habit. It’s excessive unnecessary sugar (non nutritional) calories and just not good for you. Everything in moderations right?! Don’t get me wrong I will still be drinking my Sancere and martinis but just trying to reel it in cuz it’s a long pandemic guys!
I personally did not give up my morning almond latte. Booze I can handle but I couldn’t give up my morning ritual. It’s more mental then anything for me, it’s my little caffeine hug every morning! Serg gave up both and hasn’t gone back to coffee yet, crazy right?!
Overall we felt great! I was never once hungry or felt like I was missing out on anything, on the contrary it was a really fun treat to look forward to eating meals I would never cook myself! The ingredient deck is pretty wild but super yum! Our energy was awesome, my digestion was the best it’s been in years (sorry TMI) and it really took the guess work out of eating plant based!
Do I think we will be committed vegans por vida? NO, we are not seeking to be militant in the way we eat. Our reasons for opting to try to include more plant based meals in our diet are mostly to be as healthy as we can while still having balance. To curve the trajectory that Serg’s health is going in and be more mindful. I will never say I won’t eat meat again, if my body craves it then I will enjoy it with no guilt but you can’t argue with plant based diets being better for your body and the planet so why not try to include that lifestyle to keep us healthy and set a good example for our kids.
I hope this bit of insight is helpful! I also included your most FAQ’s I received that will hopefully shed more light. If I missed anything please drop your questions in the comments and I’ll make sure to get back to you!

Q+A
Why did you do it?
For multiple reasons. I think after going hard for the holidays cooking decadent meals and enjoying way too much takeout and wine time more nights then not this pandemic, Serg and I where not feeling our best. I felt bloated and sluggish and just yuck! I actually like to do a cleanse once or twice a year just to reset. BUT this time in addition Serg found out his blood pressure was high and that he had borderline diabetes! To be honest it’s not due entirely to diet, we actually eat pretty healthy but it’s hereditary. Both his parents and brother deal with the same issue but I am just adamant that Serg will NOT be on medications for the rest of his life so I wanted to get a grip on it and see if we can avoid meds. We have both been vegetarians in the past and have toyed with the idea of going back so thought this might be a nice test!
Is it recommended for someone with autoimmune issues?
Plant based eating is very anti inflammatory which is a big side effect of autoimmune conditions. I wouldn’t say it’s recommended but a personal choice each one should make and see how your body reacts. I personally try and stay away from sugar, dairy and red meat because I do notice I get a lot of inflammation from those.
Did all the plan food make you bloated?
Actually the opposite! I thought for sure so many veggies would make me so gassy lol but to my surprise I felt the least bloated I have in years!
Which program do you do?
I did the Signature Meal Plan for 5 days and then stretched it to 7 days by supplementing my own vegan options.
Did you loose weight?
No, my goal wasn’t to loose weight and honestly the amount of food I ate was way more then I’m use to! My weight stayed exactly the same but I somehow felt way slimmer! I think it was getting rid of so much bloat! Serg on the other hand lost 10lbs. BUT he also started exercising daily since the blood pressure scare so I think that also contributed to the weight loss.
Did you lose weight or debloat?
A lot of debloating! My rings felt loose, my jeans fit comfortable again and my body just felt overall lighter!
What did you sub alcohol with?
Nothing just drank water! I also avoided sparkling water since I read that really contributes to bloat so just water with a bit of lemon.
Is it low carb?
No, Sakara does not believe in calorie counting but in food nutrition which is something I really align to. I’ve never counted calories but really focused on healthy meals that give me the energy I need. They talk more in depth about their approach on calories here if interested in reading more!
Was one “set enough for two people?
Yes AND I did supplement or bulk up the meals with my own greens and vegetables to ensure we both got an adequate amount of nutrition. I basically just looked at the weeks menu and bought more of whatever veggies wr part of the meal. It was pretty easy and we both felt very full everyday.
Did you notice a big difference in how you felt?
YES! I 100% felt my digestion incredibly improved! That’s always been an issue for me without going into detail and it was a big improvement! LOL! Energy was high all day long and for Serg I couldn’t believe the change in his skin! It was noticeable how bright and glowy his skin was, kinda cray! He just looked healthier!
Worth the money?
It’s definitely and investment but I would say it was for us. It gave us a jump start on eating more plant based because I really wasn’t sure where to start and I really wanted the delivery convenience factor to get us on the right track! We had kinda gotten into a rut with our own menu and I couldn’t see past cooking the go to meals I always do. Also, as I shared on stories I also think you can easily make it a meal plan for two people if you don’t mind adding in your own veggies. They do also offer recipes on their website so you could supplement with those! Another hot tip to help with the price tag is maybe just order 3 lunches or dinners! I am a smoothie kinda girl for lunch and breakfast for me is mostly coffee (no judgement please). That’s what we plan on doing in the future so that we can still explore their fun meals while not breaking the bank!
Did you still use TRIM while on this?
I did! The collagen I take is not vegetarian but it is such a small amount that I didn’t think it would interfere. Also the benefits my joints, skin and hair tell me my body benefits from the collagen so I will continue to take it.
Is it only vegan?
Yes, and organic, plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, non-GMO, no refined sugars.
