How to Update Your House Without Renovating

Something that I haven’t shared too much on the blog (other than my Closet Reveal and some other reveals) is that the house we live in now was a labor of l-o-v-e. We actually bought the property, a tiny 2-bedroom bungalow, back in 2011 before tearing it down to eventually build our forever home on the same lot! It was cray and I won’t bore you with all the details but let’s just say I don’t ever plan on living through a renovation again…ha!

And even though we built our dream house, our styles have evolved a bit over the past 5 years when we first styled and designed everything. So over the past couple of years, I’ve made some small changes that didn’t require renovations. It’s made me realize just HOW much you can get done without tearing down walls or needing a full renovation budget and I wanted to share some hot tips with you ladies today! Keep reading for a few ideas on how to update parts of your home without renovating a thing.

Switch out light fixtures

We added a new light fixture to our entryway to give the room drama and I love it. We also changed out the sconces above the sideboard in our dining room which again, totally changed the vibe. Places like Amazon and even Home Depot and Lowe’s have affordable light fixtures, and then you can always go more glam or custom to make a statement.

Change the paint colors

One of the easiest, most cost-effective way to freshen up a space. I love neutrals and you can never go wrong with all white as a base for basically any design style. If you rent, landlords are usually cool with paint colors changing, as long as you paint it back after or stick to something neutral. Don’t forget things like painting doors or door frames to spruce up an entire space.

Rearrange furniture

I’m kinda crazy with this and absolutely love changing things up. Whether it’s moving furniture around or restyling shelves, you can absolutely get a fresh update without actually buying anything.

This was our old set up, I change it often to refresh the space!

Go more minimal

I’m not always the most minimal person (I mean, you’ve seen my closet right?!) but I do believe in the power of simplicity. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your home and don’t know where to start, simply start getting rid of things that you don’t LOVE. You don’t have to get rid of them completely, just remove them from the space for now. Keep only pieces that you’re obsessed with out and see how you feel with a more minimal design.

Switch out decor items

I love switching out smaller items around the house like coffee table books, diffusers, trinket boxes, and other decor items that live on tables, shelves, etc. Couple of decor tips for you: place a cute box on your entry way table for keys (Serg always dump his keys somewhere out of place when he came home - problem solved lol!) + stick to greenery or dried pampas grass (this way you won’t have to replace them as often as florals).

Add rugs

If you have ugly carpet but aren’t in the market to go to wood floors or new carpet, pile on the rugs! There are some really cool design trends happening with layered rugs and you can literally cover up whatever flooring you’re not into with them. Even a basic jute rug can replace carpet and look pretty natural. You can do the same thing outside on a patio if you’re wanting to cover up flooring you’re not into.

Alright ladies, I’m sure there are tons of other ideas so leave those here if you have them! I’m thinking of posting more on my home decor tips soon so let me know if that’s something you’d be into!
