Coat Season

It is finally coat weather here in Southern California and I could not have been more excited to bring out this favorite bold red coat!  I used to live in Seattle and one of the things I loved most is that I got to wear coats regularly!  There's something elegant and tailored about a great coat and encourage you to own at least one.  During this time of year when you are going to more dressed up events and wearing cocktail wear you'll get lot's of use of your coat.  Nothing worse then wearing an elegant chic outfit and then topping it off with a jean jacket!  ;-]  There's so many great style coats out there but here are some pointers on picking the perfect one!

  1. Make sure the length is proportioned to your body.  I prefer something that hits mid thigh or right above the knee otherwise I can look like I'm being swallowed by the coat.  If you are going to go longer make sure the cut is slim and that you ALWAYS wear heels or boots with some height to them to offset.
  2. Stick with colors that will work and mix with your existing wardrobe.  I chose this bold red because my wardrobe consists of mostly blacks, greys, whites and blues so this coat can be layered easily with anything I own.  I also love the surprise pop of color since I don't tend to wear much color otherwise!  Some other great options are camel, black, grey, or dark navy.  Any of these will serve as a neutral and play nice with anything else you wear!
  3. Find the right weight and material of said coat.  What I mean by this is that the material that you coat is made ofcan literally add a lot of weight to your body and could even give you a back/neck ache is it's too heavy for you!  I also think coats should be substantial enough to feel luxurious.  If the material is too thin or the wool not great quality a coat can look flimsy and for lack of a better word, cheap.
  4. Lastly, look for timeless details in your coat.  Coats can be an investment so you want something that will look special and will take you through many seasons.  I love that this coat in particular has the mandarin collar detailing and also comes with a leather belt so it looks great open or closed!

Cheers guys and hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
