Styling Tips for a 'Model-Off-Duty' Athleisure Look

How is it that models always seem to look good no matter what they’re doing? They could be leaving a sweaty workout and still look effortlessly chic! Well, I’ve noticed a few styling hacks that take your fitness clothes to street style, achieving the model-off-duty athleisure look. You know I always add a little edge to my style, so I shared my favorite edgy workout pieces here. While I’m obviously not a model, here's how I add that extra something to my activewear if I don't want to look like I just left a fitness class.

I know we’re all busy and don’t have time to constantly be changing outfits, especially when we’re on-the-go. I’m here to tell you that with some styling tips, we can all achieve the ‘model-off-duty’ athleisure vibe without much effort. Let’s be honest, I don’t always look runway-ready, but I also don’t want to look like I just rolled out of bed. So, if I’m leaving from a workout to run errands, here are a few things I think about doing to take my look from a workout to street style. Obviously you don’t have to try all of these things at once but the little details add up!

  1. Knot my top up or tuck it in front. This just makes your outfit look like you put a little more thought into it and less frumpy.

  2. Add an extra element & coverage. I’ll also like to tie something around my waist or throw on an oversized jean jacket or leather jacket for more edge. This adds that extra element that isn’t necessarily activewear and it’s more athleisure/everyday casual. Plus, it provides coverage if you’re wearing tight leggings (if that’s your thing!)

  3. Layer, layer, layer. I’m all about cropped sweatshirts, especially for activewear, but I’m not about showing off my full midriff for a walk around the hood or running into CVS. This is where layering comes in! A cropped sweatshirt over high-waisted leggings makes you look less fitnessy but still sporty and cute. Or layering a cut-out tank or top over a sports bra for added dimension - layering is key for this type of look!

  4. Add jewelry! I honestly wear jewelry even when working out because at this point jewelry is a lifestyle to me, so don’t be afraid to do the same! Obviously leave off anything crazy or that would get in the way, but I find that the jewelry is key to maintaining this athleisure/street style look, even in leggings.

  5. Change your kicks. I prefer the model-off-duty look with a more urban feel of hightops or Nike’s (like these) vs a typical workout shoe. I also like a more vintagey looking workout shoe like these for the look, too. Just leave your lived-in running shoes at the gym if you want this look.

  6. Belt bags or your regular bag. I looove the belt bag trend for this type of look but honestly your regular tote or edgy shoulder bag works well, too. My point being, you don’t have to throw on a backpack just because you have a workout outfit on. Grab your regular bag (maybe leave the fancy ones at home) and you’re good to go!
