How to Look Chic While Staying Warm

I recently got back from a trip to Canada, and while it wasn’t crazy cold there was so many crazy activities that for those moements where cold that I had to pack for it all! Perfect example Whale Watching in the morning at 40 degrees then dinner that evening at 75! 🤪 I’m a California girl so anything under sixty degrees feels like an ice age to me. I love to travel though and never miss an après ski opportunity, so over the years, I’ve learned to dress for cold temps. Looking chic in winter clothes certainly has its challenges - nobody wants to look like the Michelin Man, am I right?! So, today I’m sharing some tips for looking chic while still staying warm and also including all the looks that I didn’t get a chance to photograph for you!

  1. LAYERS-I know I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again… the key to dressing for cold weather is layers, layers, layers! That’s why I always pack plenty of long sleeve henleys which are perfect for layering under sweaters, vests, and jackets. This is one of my favorite long sleeves because it has thumb holes which I love - and keeps your hands warm! Another thing I recommend packing is a couple pairs of fleece lined leggings because you can wear them under pants for an extra layer of warmth.

2. PROPORTIONS-Another thing I’ll usually do when styling winter outfits is keeping in mind proportions. If I’m wearing a bulkier top like an oversized sweater or puffer jacket, then I’ll keep my bottoms more form fitting. You can pile on the layers on top, but opt for a skinny jean or tight leather pant for the bottom. You can still layer fleece lined leggings under a pair of skinny pants if you need a little extra warmth.

3. COLOR THEME- I’ve shared this before but I ALWAYS pack for a trip with a color theme in mind so that everything can be mixed and matched and i can make countless outfits! This trip I went with Black (duh), grey & brown.

4. SHOES- I really only packed 3 pairs of shoes: combat boots for outdoor stuff (and yes my Prada boots are super comfortable!), sneakers and 1 pair of heels! I was pretty proud of this feat. This trip was really much more about being outdoors then stiletto moments clearly but I still feel like the combos felt chic even in comfort!

5. If it’s not too too cold, then don’t be afraid to show a little skin. I love to tuck my sweatshirts into my bra to show a peek of my midriff. I only recommend doing this with high-waisted bottoms though. I think it’s safe to say the Christina Aguilera and Brittney days are over. But it’s a great way to stay warm but balance proportions.

Hope that’s helpful for your next cold weather trip and if you want more cold weather outfit ideas and fashion inspo, I shared everything you need for an après ski cold weather trip in this post. Or, see what I wore in Finland and Deer Valley. Enjoy ladies!
