Dia de Los Muertos at Home
One of my family’s favorite holiday traditions this time of year is Dia de Los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead. For those of you that may not be familiar, Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican celebration of our beloved family and friends that have passed away. It’s not a day of mourning BUT instead a day to remember them and rejoice in their memories! Each year we like to make an altar, go to celebratory parades, and visit the beautiful floral displays. Because of COVID, this year Dia de Los Muertos is going to look very different for us but we’re not going to let it stop us from remembering our loved ones. As a family this year I still want to make it fun and special, so I partnered with Walmart to create a special (and safe) space for us as a family right in our dining room! If I can’t take my kids to a parade, I’m bringing the parade to them! This year you can find us painting sugar skulls, eating pozole, and most likely watching Coco.
Anyway, my husband is Mexican so I took on this tradition when we got married and every year we make a little altar to remember his grandpa and my grandma, my dad, and my best friend who I lost too young. My children didn't get a chance to meet any of them so it's a way for us to keep their memories alive and tell them about people we love. I'm sure you've probably seen the beautiful Calavera girls with their faces painted, I'm not that talented ha and a special thank you to Coco who definitely helped the kids understand more, thanks, Disney!
We all know by now that I don’t do color very often. But I really wanted to have fun with the tradition this year so I bought beautiful tableware and decorations to really bring Dia de Los Muertos to life from Walmart for my family! How cute are these tumblers and ceramic bowls?! The best part is that it’s all really affordable (and super quick shipping…only 2 days on some items) and trust me the decor will make an appearance for future Taco Tuesday BBQs! Cute right? I also picked up sugar skulls and coloring books along with vibrant paint and colored pencils to keep the kids entertained. Plus it will be a cute keepsake to remember for my children. Best part is a lot of the decor will transition to Halloween easily!
If like us you’re staying in this year and looking to create some fun memories for you and your family, I’ve got you set with how to create your own Dia de Los Muertos moments right at home!
